Kew Consulting - Home - Making the Most of Business Software - Independent and Objective Expert Advice, Education and Support

SAP’s acquisition of Business Objects, and its previous acquisitions of Pilot Software and OutlookSoft, poses an interesting question and challenge to SAP’s existing customer base; especially those customers who have invested in and implemented SAP Business Intelligence - now part of SAP NetWeaver and often referred to by its previous name of SAP BW (Business Warehouse).

Many of our SAP based clients view their enterprise systems and business applications implementations from a management-information, decision making, governance, risk and compliance perspectives meaning that business intelligence is critical to maximizing the value of their SAP based deployments.

Kew Consulting Opinion - SAP is acquiring Business Objects to achieve two main objectives; the first being to build its customer base and recurring revenue stream similar to Oracle’s software vendor consolidation strategy and secondly to reinforce SAP’s existing business intelligence product set, SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence.

SAP’s acquisition has ratified and confirmed the advice that we have been giving to our clients, and also validated the decision of many of SAP’s existing customers, to deploy SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence (SAP BW) and / or other non-SAP business intelligence solutions including IBM Cognos, Oracle Hyperion and of course Business Objects amongst others for maximum user buy-in and usage.

It is clear to us that many of the acquired Business Objects capabilities for business intelligence and performance management will become SAP’s standard capabilities as part of an SAP Business Intelligence Platform, replacing many of the previous SAP based components and capabilities. An early example being the SAP Business Objects Explorer (Polestar and BW Accelerator).

We have worked out the likely impact, consequences and implications, of the acquisitions of Business Objects, Pilot Software and OutlookSoft and we provide independent and unbiased help and assistance to organisations to better understand the possibilities and issues they face and help them plan their strategies and tactics accordingly.
